About us

Carrot Insurance is a digital non-life insurer that uses its own IoT device to measure mileage
and offers auto insurance billed monthly in arrears based only on the distance driven.

Customer Needs

The goal was to create an insurance product that measures distance driven using an IoT device
plugged into a vehicle's cigarette lighter socket and charges premiums accordingly.

Risk of
​data loss

Data must be collected without loss to calculate and charge insurance premiums.

The existing DBMS
​could not ingest the data

The system needed to collect large volumes of data from hundreds of thousands of users
(GPS and vehicle operation data collected every second),

but the existing DBMS could not handle the load.

Solution

Cloud instances process the data,
with three instances forming a Machbase cluster.

Redundant master and data nodes prevent single points of failure (SPOF)
and enable automatic failover when a fault occurs.
High availability (HA) and scale-out support ensure reliable service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Despite rapid growth from 100,000 subscribers in 2020 to 1 million in 2022,
the system continues
to operate reliably.

Explosive
revenue growth

Launched in February 2020, the service grew from KRW 39.5 billion in revenue in 2020
to KRW 442.5 billion in 2022 (automobile insurance accounts for 90% of total revenue).
